What Google's April SEO Update Means To You

You may not realize this yet, but Google is making a big update to their search engine algorithm this month (April 2015) that will impact your company greatly.

If your business is in any way dependent upon search engine optimization, then you’ll want to pay special attention to this.

Over the last 5 years, the percentage of people surfing the web on mobile vs desktop has continued to increase.  People are changing the way that they interact with the web in fundamental ways.

The problem with this for mobile users is that many websites are old and haven’t yet been updated to be “mobile friendly”. Even some new websites built by non-professionals aren’t even mobile friendly.

The result is that when people search Google for your product or service and find your unfriendly site, they quickly leave because your site doesn’t work well on their phone.

Guess what. Google knows this because they track everything!

From Google’s perspective, your site has just left a bad taste in their user’s mouth, and the user has lost a little trust in Google to serve up relevant websites for them.

In an effort to make the experience of their users better, they are cracking down on websites which are not mobile friendly THIS MONTH.

They’ve even went so far as to say that the impact will be “significant”.

They are taking multiple things into account, including how someone’s finger actually interacts with your site!

What is anticipated to happen is that sites which are not mobile friendly will be either be removed, or pushed down in the search results.

So you can think about it like this. If your competitors are not mobile friendly and you are, then you’re about to get a boost :).

But, if you are not mobile friendly and your competitors are, then you’re about to take a hit.
